We're now publishing James Webb's setting of St Francis of Assisi's Preghiera Davanti Al Crocifisso, Prayer Before A Crucifix. It's a short and straight-forward setting for a choir singing mostly in unison. It was written for the choir of Wimbledon Girls School, and performed by them at the lower basillica in Assisi in 2011.

James Webb has arranged Gibbons' popular hymn for SSA, and skilfully added a short piano introduction which blends a very attractive dissonant flavour with Gibbons' familiar consonant style. The three-verse setting is simple for all three voices, and in total lasts just 90 seconds. Ideal for choirs of more modest means.

This simple but gorgeous carol for unaccompanied SATB presents a strikingly human picture of the Nativity. The text has
Mary beseeching Jesus to sleep, or she'll weep. One can imagine the depth of her weariness.
Dormi Jesu was written for Chantry Quire of Chichester, for a performance in Chichester Cathedral in December 2010.

Requiem Of Loss by Edward-Rhys Harry is a 9-movement work for choir and chamber orchestra or organ.
It lasts 30 minutes.
It takes the listener on the journey from the first impact of losing someone, through the many aspects of mourning, ending in one
final, devastating realisation: there is no option but to say goodbye.
The text combines words from the Catholic requiem mass with other biblical verses, from the enraged Requiem Aeternam
and the masculine, rhythmic Kyrie Eleison to the feminine, ethereal Pie Jesu, and the final reflection of O Lord Now
Lettest Thou Thy Servant Depart In Peace. The Libera Me is set as a duet â a conversation between a man and a woman
who have lost a child. The movement is dedicated to all those who have suffered a similar loss.
The first performance of Requiem Of Loss was given by Bristol Chamber Choir in 2008.

The newest set of Preces and Responses in the catalogue is for
trebles and organ, though it's suitable for use by other unison
choirs. It's been written for the boys of Shrewsbury House School.
The organ part plays a very supporting role with plenty of leads for
the singers. The intonation is as simple as it gets, on a monotone.

This is a short and simple mass setting, for use in churches where
the congregation are able and willing to join in. It provides a
Kyrie, a Sanctus & Benedictus (in one movement), and an Agnus Dei.
There's no Gloria, so it's particularly useful for Advent and
Lent.
There's a separate part for the congregation which is easy to learn.

James Webb has arranged this captivating Scottish folksong as a trio
(flute, oboe and violin) for three of his GCSE students. There is a scarcity of material available for this combination of instruments and he was therefore forced to fill the gap, by composing something to showcase the talents of the individual performers whilst at the same time allowing them to develop skills of ensemble balance, tuning and co-ordination.
The piece is equally useful for any small group of students at A Level who are required to submit a group performance,
or as a practical example of a creative folk song arrangement.

Everyone at the Chichester Music Press congratulates Edward-Rhys
and the choir on the appointment.

Chichester Music Press is proud to present the Chichester Descant Pack by William
Morris.
The pack contains 20 descants of popular hymns and carols, taken from all parts of the liturgical year. Each one is presented on a separate sheet, so singers don't have to carry a whole new book with them. The original hymn is printed alongside the descant.
This is a photocopiable resource. Once you've bought the pack, you're at liberty to make as many copies as you need, for the people in your choir singing the descant. You can even stockpile copies for future use. (You can't distribute copies outside your choir.)
The collection has something for everyone, from simple descants through to more complicated last verse arrangements for SATB, and one even has an optional trumpet part.

A setting of the famous hymn for Eastertide (It is a thing most wonderful), for unaccompanied SATB, is now available.
Arranged by Neil Sands and dedicated to Anthony Cartmell, the piece kicks off with a tenor solo singing the tune, before the choir bring in the second verse at a slightly faster tempo. Verses 3 & 4 are more introspective, with an ebb and flow that follows the natural line of the phrases.
Some passionate moments and some reflective sections make this short piece a joy to sing.
See & hear the score and place orders here.

The Chichester Music Press is delighted to be adding a piece for oboe solo and string orchestra to its non-choral repertoire. Rex Latter's A Rustic Suite is a three movement work which reflects a pastoral atmosphere throughout. It's thoroughly English in its harmony and textures, and is very enjoyable, and at times even quite atmospheric.
The piece lasts 15 minutes, and should be within the reach of amateur string ensembles.
07 October 2007
The latest addition to the catalogue is an anthem for use in Advent, but whose text makes it suitable for weddings as well. The Advent Candle was written for the wedding of Virginia and Clive Hills in December 2006, and performed in St Paul's Cathedral.
The piece lasts 5 minutes, but its versical structure makes it easy to learn, and with its thought-provoking text and stirring musical treatment, the piece is sure to go down well with choirs of average ability.
