Of the many vivid images portrayed in the book of Ezekiel, few grasp the attention of the hearer or the singer more powerfully than that of Vidi Aquam, focussing as it does upon the cleansing, healing and renewing properties of the blood of the crucified Christ.
The text, drawn from Ezekiel 47:1, is traditionally sung during and after Holy Week, but is also appropriate for any eucharistic setting. In this composition the Latin text is set as a restrained murmuring against an increasingly joyous rendering in English, leading to near rapturous alleluias. The piece concludes with the quiet Latin plainsong setting of Psalm 118:1 "O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is gracious".
